The White-winged Crossbill, (Loxia leucoptera) is a member of the finch family, Fringillidae, found in both North America and Eurasia, as 2 subspecies, breeding in the northern coniferous forests. The specialized bill functions like forceps allowing them to extract conifers seeds with precision. A resident of its range, but may erupt southward if the crop fails. Though there are many variations, males tend to be reddish or pinkish, females greenish or yellow.
