The Purple Martin, Progne subis is in the swallow family Hirundinidae, within the great Order Passeriformes.  It is the largest swallow in North America, with a breeding range over most of the eastern US and down into Mexico.  They have become almost entirely dependent on humans for nesting structures, and tenders carefully monitor their sites.
