The Painted Bunting, Passerina ciris is one of the most colorful members of the family Cardinalidae. This applies to the breeding male, as in the first year, he looks like the green female.  Often considered the most beautiful bird in North America, it has achieved the nickname non-pareil, meaning without equal.
