Cinnamon teal (Spatula cyanoptera) is a dabbling duck who recently underwent a generic reassignment from Anas. They breed in marshes and ponds in the western United States and southwest Canada and migrate to winter in South America and the Caribbean. They rarely show up in the east. One in this gallery was at Lincoln Park’s North Pond in Chicago for some time. It formed an unusual pair bond with a female Mallard. I saw the small duck drive off a rape gang of five male Mallards.
