The Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis) is in the family Sittidae, the members of which go head first down trees. They live in Canada, Alaska and the northern and western United States, breeding in coniferous forests.  Though non-migratory, they may irrupt further south if the food supply fails.
