The American Dipper, (Cinclus mexicanus) is in the family Cinclidae within the Order Passeriformes.  The family is unique among Passerine birds in that it dives underwater to catch Arthropods and small fish. Its range is mountainous areas with fast-moving rivers from Alaska to Panama.  They have an extra eylid, the nictitating membrane that allows them to see underwater, and scales close the nostrils.
