Buffleheads are small, diving sea ducks rivalling the Green-winged Teal as the smallest American duck. Their small size evolved to fit the nest holes of Flickers.  They breed in Alaska and Canada in taiga or boreal forest habitat with wooded lakes and ponds.  Most winter on the coasts or inland in southern states. When feeding in small groups, one acts as sentry while others dive.
