The Common Redpoll, (Acanthis flammea) is in the finch family Fringillidae, along with the Hoary Redpoll were recently in the genus Carduelis, but this just changed recently when it was determined they form a distinct lineage.  It has a distribution in the north of North America and Eurasia, moving southward in winter.  Depending on food supplies, there may be irruptions farther south than usual.
