Grebes are the single family, Podicepidae in the Order Podicepiformes and are represented today by 22 species in 6 genera.  They are aquatic diving birds with dense, waterproof plumage and lobed toes.  With feet far back on their body they are clumsy on land.  They build floating nests for their precocial young that can swim at birth. The Least Grebe, here is the smallest of the species.
