The Hooded merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) is the only living species in its genus though a fossil relative is known.  They breed across large areas of North America in clear water aquatic habitats where they hunt by sight, diving on fish, supplemented by crayfish and insects.  Males can raise the hood to display. Population declines are associated with deforestation, as they nest in tree cavities.  They are very susceptible to pollution poisoning their food chain.
