The Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula)  live in the boreal forests of northern Latitudes in North America and Eurasia.  They prefer open coniferous forests or those mixed with deciduous trees. “They are found in muskegs, clearings, swamp valleys, meadows, or recently burnt areas, and generally avoid dense spruce-fir forests.” They may move south in winter or when prey is abundant.
