Nymphalidae is the largest family of butterflies, with over 6000 species and 12 subfamilies. They are characterized by standing on 4 feet with the other 2 held close to the body, so they look 4-legged.  Until recently many had their own family but further study indicated closer relationships.  Below several subfamilies are represented. Others with more photos, have their own galleries.
