The Purple Finch (Haemorhous purpureus) is a member of the family Fringillidae that breeds in coniferous, mixed forests in Canada, the northern US and some parts of the west coast.  Those in northern Canada migrate to the south US in winter, while others remain where they are. Its population has declined since the spread of the House Finch, which out-competes it.
