The Summer Tanager, (Piranga rubra), like the Scarlet Tanager were formerly placed in the Tanager family (Thraupidae) but taxonomic revisions put them into the family Cardinalidae.  They breed in the southern states and winter from Mexico to South America.  Males are red, while females are greenish yellow.  Immature males have a mottled pattern.
