The Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata) is a North American sea duck that dives for its food, mainly mussels and other benthic invertebrates.  They breed in boreal forests near freshwater lakes in northern Canada and Alaska and winter along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as far south as Texas and Baja California.
