The Western Tanager is now in the family Cardinalidae, having been recently moved from Thraupidae. With a range in the western US from southern Alaska to Mexico, they are the northernmost of the tanagers.  They breed in coniferous or mixed woods.  Males are brightly colored while females are plainer.
